Exhibition in the Iittala Glass Museum, October 12, 2024 – April 27, 2025
Fresh approaches in Finnish glass design are featured in the Iittala Glass Museum’s winter exhibition presenting glass creations from the late eighties and nineties by Annaleena Hakatie, Tiina Nordström, Taru Syrjänen and Kati Tuominen-Niittylä.
The exhibition presents familiar nineties classics that have retained their enduring popularity thanks to their timeless silhouettes and colours. Nineties designers were keen to explore new facets of glass and to experiment with techniques pushing the boundaries of their craft. Blue and white – the beloved colours of the Finnish flag – were then the dominant shades of functional glassware. Nineties design was characterized by its sculptural minimalism, enlivened by touches of imaginative playfulness. The exhibition features a selection of utility glassware and unique art glass that beautifully showcase the skill of both the artists and glassblowers and the importance of creative collaboration in glassmaking.
